Mitchell Marsh made his T20 debut for Australia in October 2011
Australia captain Mitchell Marsh was ruled out of their opening T20 World Cup game against Ireland after suffering "testicular bleeding", with Steve Smith called up as cover.
The 34-year-old was struck in the groin area while receiving throw downs during a training session in Colombo on Sunday.
Cricket Australia (CA) said Marsh is "experiencing ongoing pain and discomfort", which is "restricting his movement".
"Scans have confirmed internal testicular bleeding, and he will require a period of rest and rehabilitation," said a CA statement.
"His return to play will be guided by symptom resolution and medical advice."
All-rounder Marsh was appointed Australia's T20 captain April 2024.
He has scored 2,102 runs in 78 T20 internationals for Australia at an average of 32.33 and taken 17 wickets.
Travis Head stood in as captain for the Group B fixture against Ireland in Marsh's absence.
Smith missed out on Australia's squad for the World Cup despite impressive form in the Big Bash League.
The 36-year-old batter will now travel to to Australia as cover should Marsh not be fit enough to feature in the remainder of the tournament.
Smith has scored 1,094 runs in 55 T20 innings for the Aussies at an average of 24.86, but last played a match in the format for Australia since February 2024.
Australia face Zimbabwe at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Sri Lanka's capital on Friday.
